Soy is a key component of animal feed worldwide. But soy farming can be harmful to the environment and often goes hand in hand with hard working conditions for farm workers. Aware of these issues, Bel in 2014 joined the RTRS (Round Table on Responsible Soy), an organization that works to promote economically viable, socially equitable and environmentally acceptable soy production. The Group is also supporting a project to help soy farmers in Brazil's Mato Grosso state obtain RTRS certification through the adoption of more sustainable practices.
This commitment has been welcomed by the WWF, which partnered with Bel in 2012, and has assisted the Group in identifying environmental challenges related to dairy cow feed and offered guidance for taking concrete actions. "Bel is the first French dairy company to publicly commit to responsible soy," said Christophe Roturier, the Scientific Director of WWF France. "The greater the number of actively involved growers, the more effective our initiative against deforestation will be."
