The cheese portion lies at the heart of Bel's business model. Practical and delightful, the format is also a way to prevent food waste.
- Made with just the right amount of cheese, the portion limits food waste. 75% of consumers say that they never throw away cheese sold in single-serving portions ;
- Single-serving portions ensure that the cheese is perfectly preserved, even when the box has been opened. This also holds true for the catering sector, where 40% of kitchen cut cheese is discarded at the end of the meal service. The discard rate for portioned cheese is 6% ;
- Preventing food waste is the second reason why people buy portioned cheese, after practicality. Among 58% of consumers, the single-serving portion is the format the least associated with food waste, owing to its strong preservation qualities. Worth knowing: Contrary to popular belief, packaging does not have the greatest environmental impact. It's the cheese itself after taking into account the combined impact of all the steps required to make and sell the cheese, from the raw materials used to product delivery. For example, the aluminum foil wrapped around a wedge of The Laughing Cow® is 10 microns thick (seven times thinner than a human hair), and the greenhouse gas emissions related to the packaging is 26 times lower than emissions related to the product itself.
 IFOP study No. 712190 conducted April 2013, with 764 consumers of cheese sold on self-service store shelves and based on a series of photographic presentations of cheese in single-serving portions, graded cheese, cheese in tubs and whole cheeses.
